Central infrastructure for a telemedicine network in Hamburg

The H³ initiative is a consortium of 20 hospitals in Hamburg with the aim of advancing the digitalization of the healthcare system. The initiative focuses on cross-institutional networking, the secure exchange of medical data, and the sustainable improvement of healthcare quality in the Hamburg metropolitan region.

Within the framework of the H³ initiative, UNITY, as the general contractor, is responsible for establishing a central infrastructure as well as for the secure and efficient networking of the 20 participating hospitals. The project creates the technological and organizational foundations for secure, system-wide collaboration in the Hamburg metropolitan area and strengthens key regional cooperation partners within the central healthcare services sector.

UNITY contributes extensive expertise in the digital transformation of healthcare and assumes overall coordination as well as project management for the implementation of this complex networking initiative. The focus is on developing an implementing a platform for healthcare data integration, enabling medical reports, radiological images, and medical documents to be securely exchanged across institutions in compliance with data protection regulations — based on prior patient consent.

The step-by-step establishment of a central infrastructure provides participating hospitals with clear, secure options for location-independent data exchange of medical images and documents. This helps avoid duplicate examinations, accelerates processes, and creates the foundation for efficient collaboration across healthcare providers in the region. At the same time, the central platform enables future use cases, such as digital care coordination or the integration of imaging and reporting data into electronic patient records, as well as the secure exchange of additional clinical information, all based on standards. The project represents a significant milestone on the path toward an interoperable, connected, and patient-centered healthcare system in Hamburg and demonstrates how strategic partnerships between technology and consulting can successfully drive digital transformation in healthcare.

Improved accessibility and usability of medical data and results

“With the central infrastructure, a technical foundation has been created for the first time that enables secure, cross-institutional collaboration among all hospitals in Hamburg. UNITY managed the project with great commitment and a high level of professionalism. The H³ project demonstrates how interoperability can be successfully achieved through the targeted use of standards. UNITY and Founda succeeded in connecting different systems, vendors and stakeholders into a shared, interoperable network. This represents a major benefit for clinical practice and the quality of patient care in our region.”
