[Translate to English:]

In this OPPORTUNITY we take a look at machinery and plant engineering and discuss how companies in this sector can position themselves future-proof and systematically expand their business. Various approaches to expanding the business will be presented, based on the product-market portfolio. Here, the focus lies on operational excellence, activities regarding a market approach and innovation that concentrates on customers.

Under the keyword operational excellence, the possibilities for increasing efficiency as to aquisition and execution of projects are illustrated. In doing so, the modularization of machines and systems will be discussed among other things. In the context of approaching the market, we focus on data-based market development, the importance of which is also growing in machinery and plant engineering. The chapter “Innovation concentrating on customers” explains how machine and plant manufacturers can generate more bussiness with additional services and digital products. Finally, we present ten patterns for success that we have derived from the different positionings of companies with above-average success.

Target picture and use cases for the digital transformation

RUAG 4.0 – Digitale Transformation

RUAG is undergoing a comprehensive business transformation with the goal of designing its organization, as well as processes and systems in a future-oriented manner. The topic of digitalization – i.e. RUAG 4.0 – thereby plays a central role. The initial phase of the subproject RUAG 4.0 focused on developing a target picture for the digital transformation, developing concrete use cases and defining the corresponding data and system architecture. UNITY supported this subproject from the very beginning. First, around 60 internal RUAG stakeholders were interviewed and then additional customer and supplier opinions were obtained. This procedure enabled the core elements of the target picture and nearly 40 use cases to be to defined. The RUAG 4.0 target picture describes three main aspects: Guiding principles that serve to evaluate digitalization use cases, internal and market-oriented focus elements where digitalization offers high added value for RUAG as well as relevant mindset requirements. The latter help to empower employees to successfully shape digital change. Based on the target picture and the identified use cases, UNITY developed a functional and technical data architecture and, in cooperation with the RUAG IT community, a framework for the future system and network  architecture. These architecture basics should meet the security requirements of the military business, while at the same time, allow for interaction with third-party customers and innovation partners. All findings and requirements for RUAG 4.0 were then transferred into an implementation plan and provided with cost estimates.

Visualized target picture and concrete implementation roadmap

“UNITY developed the target picture RUAG 4.0 in a structured way, and it now serves as an excellent illustration of where our digitalization journey should go. The key to success was that UNITY talked to everyone involved about concrete use cases from the very beginning and always clarified where real added value can be generated. In addition, we benefit greatly from the consultants’ comprehensive expertise in digitalization and look forward to further collaboration.”
